Fruity Red Wine
In Red Fruity the main grape families are:
Merlot, Cabernet-Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Gamay, and Shiraz (called Shiraz in Australia).
In many areas of France two or more grape varieties are blended together. Bordeaux and the Rhone valley do this. So we also have Merlot Plus where Merlot is the biggest component of the blend. And so on.
Temperanillo is Spain's best red grape, and is blended with Garanacha (Grenache) for Rioja and Navarra wines.
In Italy Nebbiolo is the classiest grape, making Barolo and Barbaresco. It is said to have a common ancestry wth the Syrah. Sangiovese is the grape which produces Chianti. In the Chianti Due Mille programme the use of Trebbiano was dropped - and it became a division ! variety and Italy's answer to Bordeaux.
Zinfandel arrived in California in the 1850's as a label on a bundle of cuttings from Europe. It was very difficult to read the writing on the label - it looked like Zinfandel. Recently genetic research has shown it to be Italy's Primitivo grape. Pinotage was bred in South Africa in 1925. It is a cross of Pinot Noir and Cinsault. Cinsault grownn widely in South Africa, was known locally as 'Hermitage'. Hence the derivation.
Malbec, grown widely in Argentina, is an old Bordeaux grape also called 'Cot.'
